The Onondaga High School League was organized by the superintendents of public schools in Onondaga County to provide interscholastic athletic competition for its students. Established in the early 1920’s, the Onondaga County League [as it was called then] was one of the first of its kind in the area. Starting with 8 schools, its membership grew to 17 by 1971-72. In the 1972-73 school year the league agreed to expand beyond Onondaga County and welcomed schools from Cayuga and Oswego County. With six new members and a new admission policy came a new name. The Onondaga County League was renamed the Onondaga High School League to better reflect its membership. The OHSL has provided fair and equitable athletic competition for the student athletes in Central New York. It is one of the largest and oldest leagues within Section 3. It consists of 31 schools [public, private and charter] and is divided into two divisions: Liberty & Patriot.
