2021 Spring Sectionals announced
2021
Spring Sectional Dates
This plan is put forward with an understanding that we must follow all NYS Governor Orders, NYSED Regulations, NYSDOH & Local DOH regulations and guidelines, as well as consideration of all CDC, NYSPHSAA guidelines.
While our ultimate goal is to provide our 60,000 Student-athletes with an opportunity to participate in all of our offered sports during the 2020-2021 school year, the health & safety of our student-athletes and the guidance of the medical professionals will always be our top priority.
Section III is preparing to sectional championships events during the Spring of 2021school year. However, we realize there are a number of unknowns associated with hosting events like, social distancing, capacity restrictions, screening capabilities, etc. Depending on the guidance, the Section may have to pivot, revise, and amend situations
It is our hope and goal that Spring sports will be able to complete a good portion, if not all, the maximum allowable contests. Should there be interruptions or a need to shut down, the Section will address those circumstances, at that time.
Sectional Considerations: 2021 Sectionals would look very different from what we are used to.
- All sectional games will be played at higher seed.
- All Sectional contests held at the home school site of the higher seed, (or their choice of a facility at their expense).
- Spectators: In accordance with NYSDOH guidance, responsible parties must limit spectators to no more than two spectators per player and/or capacity is limited to no more than 50% of the maximum occupancy for a particular venue. Social distancing and face coverings will be required for all attendees, as well as strict adherence to all applicable Department of Health guidance. * There will be no admission fee for the Spring 2021Sectional events. The mask mandate will be lifted for fully vaccinated people.
If a school, coach or athletes is forced into quarantine, and is unable to fulfill the next scheduled commitment then the Sectional competition will proceed without them.
Qualifying and Seeding: Teams may automatically qualify for sectional play if they have played a minimum of 4 contests, and the team achieved a minimum of .400 in at least one of the following manners:
- Overall record
- League record
- Record against schools in their own class
The Section III Sport Committee will seed the tournament, using existing seeding criteria. The Sport committee would also have the opportunity to fill the 8 team brackets with at-large teams, when the 8 team brackets are not filled.
Individual and Individual/Team Sports: Because of current restrictions on large group gatherings, schools will be limited on entries that meets Section III requirements or qualifying standards.
- Track and Field – two individuals and one relay team per event that meet qualifying standards. Additional conversations will continue with the Sport Coordinators, sport committees and the AD representatives on the groups size of this event
- Golf – Five (boys) Four (girls) individuals per school that meet qualifying standards, will crown a large school and small school sectional champion.
- Tennis – Qualifying standards are in effect
